Caring for yourself is just as important in pregnancy as caring for your baby. Stress and pain play important roles in our mental health, immunity, endocrine balance and so much more. While not all stress can be avoided, many women find pregnancy a natural time to perform self-care to help manage their stress. A 2023 meta-analysis, which is a study that pools data from other studies, found that around 20% of pregnant women could experience excessive concern regarding future events in pregnancy under normal circumstances, and & 70% will experience stress. –Source
How are we using science?
Being comfortable is the most important part of your pregnancy massage experience. All of our staff are trained in prenatal massage and can massage you in a side-lying position or face down. Each time you visit, you will have a consultation with your massage therapist to assess how you might be most comfortable and if anything in your health history has changed. Our priority is to keep you safe and comfortable. Even if you change your mind partway through the message about a position being comfortable, we can move you. We have extra pillows and blankets on hand to adjust table positions with ease.
Our prenatal massages are designed to help you with stress management and also target pain and problems if you need them. Each one of our sessions is custom to you, but typically they are a full body massage unless you want otherwise. Your massage room will be dimly lit and we play music to help you relax.
Please be sure to tell your massage therapist about any complications you might have or if your are uncomfortable so that they can advise you of the best options for your specific situation.
The Vital Role of Prenatal Massage in Supporting Expectant Mothers
The role of prenatal massage is pivotal in supporting expectant mothers throughout pregnancy by addressing physical discomfort, promoting relaxation, and enhancing overall well-being. Here’s how:
- Alleviating Discomfort: Prenatal massage helps relieve common pregnancy-related discomforts such as back pain, sciatica, leg cramps, and swollen ankles by targeting specific areas of tension and muscle tightness.
- Reducing Stress and Anxiety: The calming effects of prenatal massage can significantly reduce stress and anxiety levels in expectant mothers, promoting a sense of relaxation and emotional well-being during this transformative time.
- Preparing for Labor: Prenatal massage can help prepare the body for labor by promoting flexibility in the muscles and joints, encouraging optimal positioning of the baby.
- Enhancing Sleep Quality: By promoting relaxation and reducing discomfort, prenatal massage can improve sleep quality for expectant mothers, helping them to feel more rested and rejuvenated throughout their pregnancy.
- Emotional Support: Prenatal massage provides a nurturing and supportive environment for expectant mothers to connect with their changing bodies, bond with their unborn babies, and address any emotional concerns or fears related to pregnancy and childbirth.
Overall, prenatal massage plays a vital role in promoting the physical and emotional well-being of expectant mothers, offering relief from discomfort, reducing stress, and supporting a healthier pregnancy journey.
Prenatal Wellness Your Way! Have Your Massage Face Down or on Your Side
Our massage space is equipped with all the things to make you have the most comfortable wellness and therapeutic massage experience possible. Not all things are right for all people, so we adapt the massage to you. Each one of our rooms has a pregnancy massage table, which enables us to treat pregnant women of all shapes and sizes face down, just like a traditional massage. Don’t worry! We won’t be squishing, baby; there is plenty of room.
Most women love our prenatal massage tables, but some people are more comfortable and prefer to have their massage on their side. When you have a massage on your side, the term for that is called ‘side-lying’. Both a traditional massage position, and a massage where you are pillowed onto your side are equally as good. What matters most is your comfort and safety and there is no one size fits all solution.
Optimizing Prenatal Massage Frequency for a Healthy Pregnancy
The frequency of prenatal massage is entirely up to you. Many women see us once a week for their entire pregnancy, but others might come in as needed. However, for high-risk pregnancies or complications, the frequency and timing of prenatal massage should be determined in consultation with a healthcare provider. Communication with a qualified prenatal massage therapist and healthcare team is essential to ensure a safe and customized treatment plan throughout pregnancy.
The Comprehensive Benefits of Prenatal Massage Therapy
The benefits of prenatal massage include alleviating muscle tension and discomfort, reducing stress and anxiety, promoting better sleep quality, easing joint pain, enhancing mood, reducing swelling and edema, preparing the body for labor, and providing emotional support during pregnancy. “A 2020 Meta-analysis of four studies revealed a moderate effect of massage therapy on women’s depressive symptoms, so massage is a viable choice for women who want to try it as a means of support” –Source

FAQs:
1- Can I have a massage at any stage of pregnancy?
Yes! Provided you have no pregnancy complications, you are likely a candidate for massage therapy while pregnant. As your doctor, what they recommend? Be sure to tell them you would be going to a licensed health care provider/massage therapist for your massage.
2- Can I have a massage in the first trimester?
Yes! (I just wrote a blog for you on this you can pull from there and re-write) There are no problems with having a massage in the first trimester. Many people do not even know they are pregnant when they have their first prenatal massage.
3- Can I have my ankles massaged in pregnancy?
Yes! There is no medical issue with having your feet or ankles massaged in pregnancy. It does not cause early labor, if it did there would be a massage therapist in every delivery room. This myth comes out of a tradition on massage but is not based in science.
4- Are your massage therapists Certified in prenatal massage?
There is actually no prenatal massage certification. Massage therapists can take a class in prenatal massage or hold a certificate in prenatal massage. Ie they can have taken extra training. Most massage therapists will have gotten prenatal training in school, if they need more training we make sure they get it before being a provider at our location.
5- How late In my pregnancy can I have a massage?
You can have a massage right up until you deliver. Some people bring massage therapists to their delivery if they are also doulas.
6- What is in your lotion? I am trying to keep additives and parabens out of my life while pregnant?
We have 2 main options for you. We recommend for our pregnancy massage the JoJoba Oil we have in the office. We selected this oil as it is very close to the skin’s natural sebum and has no additives. We also have a hypoalergenic lotion if you prefer to use that. If you have skin sensitivities to either of those we also have grape seed oil available on request at the office. This also has no additives.
7- Is having a massage while I am pregnant safe?
Having a massage can be safe at any stage of your life, but there are some reasons not to have a massage. Please ask us or your healthcare provider about your specific situation. There are some health conditions that are contraindicated for massage. Conditions like blood clots or uncontrolled diabetes can cause complications, for example. It is very important that you fill out your healthcare questionnaires and update your provider on any changes. This is not specific to pregnancy but to all health conditions.
8- Are there any specific precautions or contraindications for Prenatal Massage?
While Prenatal Massage is generally safe for most expectant mothers, there are certain precautions and contraindications to be aware of, especially for high-risk pregnancies or women with certain medical conditions. It’s important to discuss any concerns or medical history with your massage therapist before starting treatment.
